In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves.. or it might destroy her.
Review: Hunger Games fans rejoice; there's a new dystopian in town and it kicks butt! I try to never compare books, and I'm not comparing this one to The Hunger Games because, in reality, it's not similar at all. What is similar is that heart-pounding, gut-wrenching, intense emotional reaction I experienced while reading both books. Divergent is so action-packed and engaging that I guarantee you won't be able to put it down.

Beatrice (Tris, as we come to know her) is from one of the five factions-- Abnegation. They are known for being selfless and this is the only way of life Tris knows. As it comes time for her to choose which of the 5 factions she will enter, she wonders if she can leave her family to begin a life unknown. I won't mention which of the 5 she chooses because one of the many major perks of this book is that it is full of suspense!

Once in that faction she is faced with unimaginable obstacles and heartbreak. Her strength and courage stand out at the top and make her a force to be reckoned with. While there, she makes friends who enable her to figure out exactly who she is, and one friend shows her even more than that. One of the leading figures in her new faction manages to break through the wall Tris has around herself and show her exactly how powerful she can be. By doing this, he also finds his way inside her heart.

Veronica Roth seamlessly describes this foreign world to us in clear detail. Each character helped compose a plot that makes the reader feel like they are in the room with them during the action. I admired the no-nonsense personality Tris had throughout this story. She was tough but showed her vulnerability when needed. I never felt she was"too much" or"not enough" anywhere in this book. She was perfect! The passionate chemistry within the pages of this story will honestly leave you breathless. It's one of those romances where the boy can look at the girl across the room and you get chills! So well written and constructed. I never felt it was rushed or unrealistic. I could see their relationship grow as time progressed. I will say that it is, by far, one of the most romantic and touching relationships I have ever read in a book.

The world-building was flawless and Veronica Roth has set up the foundation for an astonishing continuation to this series. She doesn't shy away from the brutal details that go along with this futuristic society, which make it even more gripping.

I honestly can't say enough good things about this book. The setting, characters, plot, romance, and writing were all done to perfection. Divergent is exactly what I had been looking for in a book. I would even go as far as to say I may have even enjoyed it more than The Hunger Games. Yes, I said it! Veronica Roth has moved the bar up for dystopian novels and young adult books in general. So run out and order this book now! It is sure to be a huge hit and I will be on the edge of my seat waiting for the next installment.
