Scary Movie

When it comes to scary stuff, I’m a total wimp. My over-active imagination never gives me a break, probably why I’m perfect to be a paranormal romance writer—a good place to put my imaginary friends to work.

The first scary movie (and last) I saw, technically against my will, was When the Stranger Calls (1979). I was at a slumber party in 7th grade and the birthday girl’s parents thought the movie would be good entertainment—NOT! I mean look at the cover! I kept telling my friends I didn’t want to see it (since I knew myself and was still deathly afraid of Jaws to where I couldn’t swim in our pool alone anymore). Anyway… where does the lowly scardy-cat go when the parents leave for the evening, and the girls turn out the lights and start the movie? I tried to stay occupied in the same room away from the TV, but could hear the music and my curiosity got the better of me.

Once the idiotic girl got the phone call traced and the cop told her “we’ve traced the calls… they are coming from inside the house,” I think I screamed solid for a minute. I didn’t sleep that night, or the next and ended up sleeping between my parents for a week.

Sad thing was babysitting became a terrifying event after that. It also ruined my dream of having my own phone line in my room that I was going to finally get for my 12th birthday. Once it was finally installed a year later, if I happened to be home alone, or babysitting my younger siblings, I’d disable the phone so no one could call from it.

Of course, ironically I write about vampires. But alas, I know where my vampires are at all times, so … they don’t scare me. Needless to say, when someone says, “have you checked the children,” it means a totally different thing to me.
