My Beautiful Struggle + [prize]

Crossroads Tour: Joy Preble

What has been the biggest thing to happen to you since last years Crossroads Tour?

Lots of things! We finalized the sale of book 3 of the Dreaming Anastasia series and I finished writing it in July. I also was asked to write a different book, which I talk about in #3. My son got married in May in the best wedding ever! (really. It was.) I decided to take a year off from teaching and write full time this year. Lately life’s been on a large scale.

Have you found that the writing process is easier as you progress through the Dreaming Anastasia series?

Yes and no. I know what to expect and how to pace myself with projects. In terms of the series, I know the characters, so that’s a help. But the more you learn in a creative craft like writing, the more you realize you need to learn. So it’s a constant process of growth and struggle and change. What came easily for one book may be very hard to achieve in the second or third.

Can you give us any hints as to what we can expect with book 3, Again and Again ?

Oooh! Spoilers! Well, without giving too much away, you can definitely expect the numerous plot threads of all the books to come together here. Everyone reappears at some point, either in real time or flashback. And there’s a new Russian folkloric character, Koschei the Deathless. Plus Anne gets up close and personal with Ethan’s past love life… I love that part of the book! But that’s all I can say.

Do you have any other current writing projects in the works?

Yes! I am so very excited to announce that I am finishing up a completely different book called The Sweet Dead Life, which will release in 2013 from the new Soho Teen imprint. I’ve gotten to work with the delightful and brilliant Dan Ehrenhaft again, which has been awesome. TSDL is another paranormal, but it’s definitely a little edgier, a lot funnier, and it’s set right here in Texas. We just announced it like this: DREAMING ANASTASIA trilogy author Joy Preble's THE SWEET DEAD LIFE, in which a sixteen-year-old stoner returns from a fatal car accident as his dying sister's guardian angel and helps her solve a vast family mystery.
