My Beautiful Struggle + [prize]

Crossroads Tour: Jeri Smith-Ready

Shade is such a wonderful YA series. Do you plan to write more YA after this series is complete? Would you like to continue with paranormal books or add in some contemporary along the way?
Thank you! Actually, my next YA after SHINE (SHADE Book 3, coming out next May) will be a contemporary stand-alone. We’ll be announcing all the fun details in October (probably by the time this interview is out!), but I can tell you this much: 1) it’s about a boy; and 2) I am SO excited about it!

Can you give us any hints as to what we can expect in book 3, Shine ?
SHINE picks up right where SHIFT left off, and by the end of Chapter One, all of readers’ expectations will be blown out of the water.

Which character do you enjoy writing about the most, and which one seems to give you the most problems?
It’s changed over the course of the series. In the first two books, I was most drawn to Logan and his younger brother Dylan, but this year I’ve really gotten closer to Zachary. Maybe because I traveled to his home city of Glasgow, Scotland, earlier this year, or maybe because I put the poor boy through hell in SHINE and feel sorry for him.

You contributed to a few anthologies, including Enthralled: Paranormal Diversions . How do you prepare to write a short story?
My short stories have all been from the point-of-view of a different character than my novels, so part of the preparation is getting into the new character’s head and finding their voice. Then of course I have to make sure the plot stays manageable for a story. In “Bridge,” Logan’s story in ENTHRALLED, that was easy because it took place in just one day and evening. “Bridge” is one of my favorite things I’ve ever written, because I love Logan as a character (he’s a lot like me), and I loved writing verse for the first time. It was a very emotional experience.
